AKROTIRI

The prehistoric city of Akrotiri lies in the most southerly part of Santorini.Professor Marinatos excavated the area in the 60s to prove a theory he developed after he excavated the Minoan city of Amnissos.He proved that the Minoan civilization was destroyed by the gigantic eruption of the volcano in Santorini.He unearhed a very sophisticated city whos inhabitants had shops,build three story houses and painted frescoes.Unfortunately the roof of the site is currently been changed to a new glass roof,so only one corridor is open and the secondary scaffolding obscures everything else.The site wont be fully open until 2007.Beyond the archaeological site there are beautifull coves with crystal clear waters,fish taverns on the waterfront and the famous Red Beach
