TREK FROM GAVARNIE TO THE ORDESSA CANYON
Trek to the ordessa canyon in sept-2001 with
Day 1
My second major trek,i arrived in a Ryanair flight at Biarritz where i met the qroup, seven men and only one woman. We were tranfered via Lourdes to the small town of Luz high on the Pyrenees.During dinner we met our guide Albert (a local man from the town of Couteret).Very early morning start ,drive up to Gavarnie and start of the trek in quite cold conditions.Albert set quite a fast pace and i had problems keeping up (it was a six day hut to hut so we were carriyng around 12 kg in our rugsacks).Three hrs to the refugio Espuguettes, a good break with early lunch and on to the top of Pimene,a lone peak out of the main range but at 2800m a formitable climb. From the top of Pimene we had stunning views of the Vignemale,Estaube and the cirque de Gavarnie.By now one of the qroup had problems keeping up to the pace (it was not me ).Early afternoon return to the hut and a siesta. At the hut we met several other qroups that were following the same trek as us.The hut was comfortable (no showers) and not too crowded.
