PYRENEES HIGH ROUTE TREK
Pyrenees high route trek in sept 2000 with
My first major trek, why did i chose a grade D, i do'nt know.I was travelling with my friend George and six others for our first spectacular trek. Our accomodation was at the Feniere,a private lodge outside Luchon.9am minibus ride up to Superpagneres above Luchon and on to the GR10 path, very hot day, very fast pace was taking it's toll, the path followed an up and down route to the refugio Espingo with a final steep ascent up to the refugio Portillon. The refugio was located at 2600m next to a lake below the glaciers.Altidute sicknes and exaustion took it's toll on me ,after dinner a quick shower and off to bed.SECOND DAY 7am start, round the lake and up to Col De Litterole skirting the glacier on the way.The views from the col were spectacular on both sides.Mike our guide set a rope for assistance as the other side was scree .We all got down safely on the moraine of the nearby glacier, reassembled and carried on on a very rocky terrain without a proper path ,we followed cairns up to a balcon were we had lunch. From there we could see the rest of the route ,down the Remune valley and on to the Benas valley. The route got even worse with a steep descend on boulders and a huge hike through the never ending valley.Mid afternoon we stopped for another break in a meadow in the treeline. From there another descent through forest and meadows into the Benas valley and a stop and Coke at the Hospitale de Benasque. We thought thats it ,but not,the refugio was another 500m up further on .We carried on for several km to the end of the valley and at Besutra started ascending. The sign said 45min to the hut ,it took me 1hr 30min i was suffering from ankle fatigue and George from severe blisters.8:30 pm i reached the hut ,300m up then 2150m down and 500m up again, total of 14hrs 30min on the trek (we were the last group to take that route ,the following year the route changed to an easier one) .Refugio Reclusa is the base camp for Pico Anneto, very busy, noisy and most of it under construction at the time.
