The main group of mountains in the southern Alps. They consist mainly of limestone and some volcanic rock. The population in the south is mainly Italian and Austrian (South Tyrolian )in the north. The valleys have a definite Alpine look with meadows in the lower parts followed by dense forest and mainly bare rock above 2000m.Very busy in the summer months with trekkers ,climbers and bikers(they mostly ride around the twisty roads of the four passes). There are cable cars and ski lifts on every mountain so exploring the higher parts becomes quite easy. Here are some photos from driving the four passes and touring around Arabba.
