A leasurely morning ,the coach took us to the mouth of the valley and we started our walk. The white valley highlight is not the churches but the giant fairy chimneys, they came in every size .The valley is cultivated throughout,we walked amongs vineyards and apple trees. At the top before Uchisar it narrows,so we climbed the side crossed the main road and entered the village of Uchisar. The village is dominated by the great fort ,a giant soft rock riddled with rock cut houses and fortifications. Is separated in the old and new village. The old village was mixed Greek-Turkish until 1923.Most of the old houses are in ruin,a few have been renovated. In the lower part some of the rock cut houses in the fairy chimneys are still occupied. The great rock of Uchisar (the highest point in Cappadocia) was used mainly as a fort as well as an observation point. Now is quite eroded but still a wonder to the skill and determination of the christians that build it,a recent discovery is a tunnel that leads from the fort to the river below ,ensuring they had water in case of a seige. We had lunch in the terrace of a restaurant overlooking the valley. After lunch while others rested 3 of us walked round the old village exploring and taking photos.
